Many of us think that the first mobile phones were produced by Nokia. They will be surprised to find out that the first mobile phones were created by Dr. Martin Cooper, who was a former general manager for the systems divisions at Motorola. In that period there were two important companies who tried to present to the world the portable terminals, Bell Labs and Motorola; but is was Martin Cooper who did the miracle and his first call was addressed to his rival, Joe Engel, Bell Labs head of research.Motorola gets the credit for creating the first mobile phones, but these first mobile phones weren’t as practical as we may think. The first mobile phone was created in six weeks and it was presented to the pubic on 3 April, 1973, when its creator made the first call. It is true; 10 years had to pass in order to create an accessible mobile phone which could be bought by the ones who had enough money, because, let’s not forget it, the first mobile phones were quite expensive. 10 years had to pass in order to obtain all the licenses, needed by the mobile phone.
Motorola DynaTac 8000x was the first mobile phone and for many of us, who are costumed with small models of mobile phone, can be weirdness. This first mobile phone had a talk time of 30 minutes, a stand-by period of 8 hours, it weight almost 1 kg and it was very expensive. This”technological miracle” costed almost $4000. People weren’t so satisfied by this model because the simple act of carrying this mobile phone was a true challenge. 1996 was an important year because Motorola launched StarTac, the first mobile phone which you could easily carry it in your pocket. This model of mobile phone was the sensation of many countries, even of Romania. This mobile phone has obtained the 6th place in the top of the best gadgets of that period.
Motorola was the promoter of the mobile phones. Nokia has followed it`s example and gave to the world maybe the best mobile phones ever; at least that’s what the statistics say. Nokia and not only this mobile phone company contributed at the mobile phone development. If at the beginning we had mobile phones which couldn’t be carried, now we have so small mobile phones that we even forget we have a mobile phone.
