Things change with the velocity of light. If now we can benefit of small and advanced mobile phones, years ago things were totally different. Nowadays, the mobile phone isn’t just a simple mobile, it is a true jewel. We can use it to contact all the persons we want, to take pictures and even send emails. It’s the perfect jewel. We all know how mobile phones used to look like. They were true rocks. They used to be so heavy that it was quite difficult to take them with you. 1980 represents the moment when the first functional mobile phones were launched.

This mobile phone was very heavy and it used to offer to its users a talk time of only 35 minutes and a charger time of 10 hours. If we compare this device with the actual mobile phones we can consider them a true monster, but in that period it was a revolutionary device. People weren’t so happy with this device because it was very heavy and also very expensive. It had to pass 10 more years in order to launch the first functional mobile phone. This mobile phone was a reduced version of the DynaTac and it coasted $3500 the equivalent of $7400 of today’s money.

Motorola was the first producer which received the approval from the U.S. Federal Communication Commission for the first portable device known later under the name of mobile phone. In 1985 Motorola becomes the world’s leader. It is the first producer which introduces a complete line of mobile phones: 2000, 4000 and 6000 DynaTac models for cars and the 8000 portable device.

Motorola used to offer to its users, devices which were quite big and heavy, but in 1989 they launched Motorola MicroTac. Motorola launched the smallest portable device with lappet. It used to weight 348,71gr and its dimensions were of 17,14 x 5,71 x 3,17. The smallest mobile phone from that period used to be sold at the price of $3000. MycroTac was the representative mobile phone of the 1980’; it was available in seven versions and people used to buy them till 1991 at prices between $2495 and $3495.

If you are one of those who thought that Nokia was the mobile phone brand which introduced on the market the mobile phone you were wrong. Nokia launched the first Nokia mobile phone in 1992. This device was the one which has realized the performance of replacing the DynaTac devices. It had smaller dimensions and that is why people used to buy them, because they were more practical.

DynaTac was the representative mobile phone for 1980. It’s true, they weren’t as aesthetical as the today’s mobile phones, but this is what the market used to offer to the mobile phones users. The beginnings are always quite difficult and the mobile phones area wouldn’t be an exception.
